About us

Watershed organization that monitors and restores wildlife and their habitat in the Kouchibouguac region of New Brunswick, Canada.

Our vision

The Greater Kouchibouguac Watershed Association wish to promote the value of community work in building a strong economy in a healthy ecosystem for future generations. GKWA envision a community that offers a superior quality of life, encourages economic and social development, and where the natural environment is healthy and accessible.

Our objectives

  • We want our waters and our environment to be suitable for a variety of recreational uses including swimming, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, etc.

    Recreational and commercial fishing

    We want our waters and our environment to be suitable for animal life and reproduction, in particular that of all species involved in recreational and commercial fishing. To this end, we must

    • Protect and restore aquatic habitat.

    • Make a responsible use of lands within the watershed.

  • We wish to use eco-tourism to leverage the region’s tourist potential. A healthy environment combined with adequate infrastructures and services will provide the basis for the development and prosperity of tourism and eco-tourism in our region.

  • We wish to ensure that the watershed will provide sources of drinking water in the quantity and quality required in the long term. Responsible land use in the watershed will ensure the health of its water table.

  • We wish to maintain the ecological integrity of the river and the watershed by protecting the natural quality of water, soil, plant life and animal life, and respecting the links between them.

Our mandate

Our group intends to bring information and assistance to people in the community to enable them to take enlightened decisions, and to encourage behavior that will promote a healthy environment in ecological, economic and social terms. Our group also intends to take action through its restoration efforts and habitat improvement / preservation projects. Several activities will enable the group to accomplish its mandate:

  • The preparation of various educational activities enabling awareness among youth and any other person in the community;

  • The establishment of an information system to provide advice and information while establishing the link with government agencies when needed.

  • The completion of concrete work to improve the banks, fish habitat, water quality and the environment in general.
